To help introduce and/or embed the principles of discipleship and A Methodist Way of Life in your church or Christian community, we have created three service outlines:

  1. Outlines for 13 worship services and small groups (whether Sunday or midweek, in a church building, café or forest) exploring each of the 12 commitments of A Methodist Way of Life (MWOL), plus a general introduction.

  2. A shorter version consisting of four outlines which explore the 12 commitments under the banner of Our Calling.

  3. Four NEW outlines for Local Arrangements and pioneer settings with an emphasis on key discipleship themes.

The outlines are designed as guidance notes, allowing you to ‘pick and mix’ through the options, and add your own personal stories, quotes from books you’ve read, or podcasts you listen to. The outlines are presented as Word documents so that you can edit them.

None of the series have a set order, and they can all be used independently. When used as a series, the outlines work best when everyone in the church (or circuit) is working together.

For further guidance on how to best use different parts of the outlines, including suggestions for people with different roles in the church, take a look at the How To guides.

12 commitments of A Methodist Way of Life

An introduction (or reminder) of each of the MWOL commitments, plus an introduction to the framework. Use as a series, or as a one-off service focusing on one of the commitments.

If you are doing the whole series, it might be helpful to start with a familiar commitment – something that allows you to celebrate what the community and its members are already doing. But don’t leave all the hard ones until the end! You could rotate through one commitment from each of the four areas of Our Calling, or look at each area in sequence.

Our Calling: Evangelism

The Church exists to make more followers of Jesus Christ

What is discipleship?

Four service outlines designed particularly for Local Arrangements and pioneer contexts, introducing key themes of discipleship. The outlines are designed to be used separately, but could be used as a series.

Encourage and challenge worshippers to consider who God really is, and what it means to be a follower of Jesus in every moment of our lives.
